ORLANDO, Fla. (March 2025) — What started as a passion project in 2022 has blossomed into a vibrant hub for cultural expression in Orlando. Encanto Caribe Musical, a program of the Colombian Multicultural Integration, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to promoting multicultural integration through music, dance, and art, with a special emphasis on the Barranquilla Carnival.
Founded to bridge communities and celebrate Colombian heritage, Encanto Caribe Musical offers a platform for children and adults alike to learn about the rich cultural traditions of Colombia’s northeast coast, with a strong focus on the dynamic rhythms and dance styles of the Barranquilla Carnival.
“We aim to preserve and share our cultural roots with the next generation, especially here in the U.S.,” said Javier Molinares, president of the Colombian Multicultural Integration. “By teaching music and dance, we foster understanding and appreciation for Colombian and Caribbean Latin cultures, creating a welcoming space for all who want to learn.”
The program offers several classes for both children and adults, including:
- Children’s Music and Dance Classes:
These classes introduce young learners to the vibrant rhythms of the Barranquilla Carnival, along with salsa, merengue, cumbia, and mapalé. Students will learn about the cultural significance behind each rhythm, connecting them with their heritage through music and movement. - Adult Music and Dance Classes:
For adults, the program offers both beginner and advanced classes that dive deeper into Caribbean Latin rhythms, including salsa, merengue, bachata, and cumbia, while also focusing on the exciting dances of the Barranquilla Carnival. These classes help participants develop their dance techniques and musical skills while exploring the cultural roots of each style. - Special Workshops and Performances:
In addition to regular classes, Encanto Caribe Musical offers special workshops and performances that provide students with opportunities to showcase their skills. These events celebrate the Barranquilla Carnival and other Caribbean traditions, fostering a sense of community and cultural pride.
The program is led by two passionate instructors from Barranquilla, Colombia—Johana Marquez, a seasoned dance professor, and German “Tito” Nuñez, an accomplished music professor. Marquez, who has extensive experience in Colombian folkloric dances, including the lively cumbia and mapalé, brings an authentic teaching style to the program, while Nuñez, a talented musician with a deep understanding of traditional Colombian instruments, introduces students to the complex rhythms that define Colombian music.
“Dancing and playing music are not just about steps and notes; they are about telling stories,” said Marquez. “The Barranquilla Carnival is all about celebration, and we want our students to feel that joy and energy in their bodies and hearts.”
Held every Saturday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at First Baptist Orlando, the program offers a mix of music and dance classes that introduce students to the rhythms of salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia, and more, while providing an in-depth look at the Barranquilla Carnival’s traditional dances. The program is open to all ages, offering children and adults the opportunity to explore and celebrate Caribbean Latin culture.
“Through this program, we are creating a space where people can come together, learn, and celebrate the shared joy of music and dance,” said Nuñez. “The Barranquilla Carnival is a symbol of our heritage, and we hope to pass that spirit on to everyone who joins us.”
As Encanto Caribe Musical continues to grow, the program remains dedicated to making cultural integration a central part of the community by providing access to the arts and fostering an appreciation for multiculturalism.
